David Sedaris=Crypto-Racist

by

Something has been bothering me about the quote attributed to essayist David Sedaris. He is discussing the undecided voter and characterizes their choice as thus:

To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”

To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.

So assuming for the sake of argument that McCain is the chicken. That makes Obama the plate of shit with glass in it. Would that be because shit is brown? Is it because black people smell? Does the signifigance of “glass” have something to do with crystal meth? Is that a nod to Obama’s rural white heritage? Sedaris is an admitted former meth user, he would be in a good position to know a fellow traveler tweaker.

More likely, he is calling Obama the chicken and McCain the plate of shit.

Is it because black folks like fried chicken? Or chicken in general. Is that some secret racist insinuation about Chicken George or chicken heads?

Nice use of “code words“, Dave. All the NPR listeners must be proud.

I plan on withdrawing my $10 pledge to my local public radio station in protest of this obvious hate speech.

You’re dangerously good at this — you oughta be in TV news.

  2. newscoma Says:

You could replace Anderson Cooper or Shep Smith.

  3. Jon Says:

No no – he doesn’t say what sort of chicken it is, the undecided voter *asks* how the chicken is cooked. Clearly the undecided voter is the racist.

  4. DirtCrashr Says:

The chicken is cooked in watermelon sauce with a hint of pork.

Do the little bags of dried up peanuts symbolize Carter?

  6. Colin Parte Says:

You got this wrong. Sedaris, in my view, is saying that it is a very obvious choice. Good food = chicken = Obama. (How well cooked means how experienced he is) Or another four years of McBush!
No point in over-analysing it. It’s obvious from the start.

  7. Sarcastro Says:

Wow. Thanks for clearing that up, Colin. It all seems so clear now.

  8. Roger Abramson Says:

Yes, Colin, thanks. Sedaris’ point was so subtly made that it’s going to go over way too many heads. Sarcastro really needs to get his head on straight.

That’s why I just 86ed comments altogether. Don’t have the patience for it.

I am african-american and a huge fan of David’s….I think that is one of the most ridiculous analyses of a 5-line quote that I have ever seen. Does anyone know the meaning of the word “context”? Take your $10 back, i’ll send $20

  13. Ama Says:

Can you really not see the obvious? The choice is between something rational and something clearly NOT! Read any David S book and you will most definitavely be TOLD that he is a DEMOCRAT with no exceptions to this rule. The shit refers to MCVain. Listen to any interview online and you will come away aware that he is an avid and committed Obama supporter. Take a chill PILL and don’t react in a knee-jerk RACIST way.
    Thanks.

Nice. Someone comments on a sarcastic blog post (brilliant idea btw, wow pure genius etc) after misreading the tone, and you feel annoyed by it.

The only thing worse than people who don’t get sarcasm is people who have to roll their eyes and sigh loudly about people not getting sarcasm.
